Thailand and Cambodia Trip
Theary

Yesterday was spent in a bus. We drove for about eight hours from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. We took a short break for lunch in a town where deep fried tarantulas are the finest cuisine. I wasn’t brave enough to try those. Maybe another time. Today we went to visit AFESIP, or Agir Pour Les Femmes En Situation Precare, an organization started by Somaly Mam. This woman is incredible. She lived through the Pol Pot regime and was abandoned by her parents. She was forced into prostitution as a young child and when she escaped she dedicated her life to rescuing and helping other trafficked girls and women. She and her organizations have won numerous awards. If you want to learn more about her, read her book “The Road to Innocence.” We went to the center to meet some of the women and I had the blessing of being introduced to Theary. She is a twenty-two year old ex-prostitute with a one year old son and the most beautiful heart. We spent the entire time talking and laughing together. She knew a lot of English and was working on learning sewing and computer skills so she could find a job and support her son. Theary told me that she had a sister, but her sister got married and doesn’t talk to her anymore because of her history of prostitution. She said, “I didn’t have a sister but now I do! You are my new sister!” I told her, “Theary, if your sister saw how much you’ve grown and accomplished and how hard you have worked, she would be so proud of you, just like I am proud of you.” When my group left, she hugged me and kissed me good-bye and said, “I love you, sister.” My heart is breaking right now. I love this woman so much and I wish there was some way I could give her all the wonderful things I’ve been blessed with. I wish she knew how precious and treasured and loved she is. I ache for her to know the love of Jesus. Please pray for Theary, my dear sister.
